Psalm 75

      1 We praise you, God,
         we praise you, for your Name is near;
         people tell of your wonderful deeds.
      2 You say, “I choose the appointed time;
         it is I who judge with equity.
      3 When the earth and all its people quake,
         it is I who hold its pillars firm.
      4 To the arrogant I say, ‘Boast no more,’
         and to the wicked, ‘Do not lift up your horns. w
      5 Do not lift your horns against heaven;
         do not speak so defiantly.’ ”
      6 No one from the east or the west
         or from the desert can exalt themselves.
      7 It is God who judges:
         He brings one down, he exalts another.
      8 In the hand of the LORD is a cup
         full of foaming wine mixed with spices;
         he pours it out, and all the wicked of the earth
         drink it down to its very dregs.
      9 As for me, I will declare this forever;
         I will sing praise to the God of Jacob,
      10 who says, “I will cut off the horns of all the wicked,
         but the horns of the righteous will be lifted up.”

What happens when our daily grind and the daily pressures of life impact the internal gears of our lives?  It can be very easy to slip into ‘survival mode’ to try to force solutions to stabilize the world around us.

This Psalm seems to offer us an alternative.  It contrasts human striving with divine sovereignty. The imagery of the “horn” represents our desperate attempts to build power, status, and security on our own terms. We exhaust ourselves looking to the horizons—east, west, or the desert—hoping to secure our own advancement or vindication.

Yet God steps into our striving with a reality check.  True solutions do not come from human scheming. We do not have to panic over delays, manipulate outcomes, or carry the weight of the universe. The Creator actively governs the timeline, cuts through pride with flawless equity, and holds together our reality.  Survival mode on our own is futile and even self defeating.  It is dependance on God that puts us back on track.

⚓ 3 ANCHORS FOR YOUR WEEK

  • Trust God to Stabilizes Things(vv. 2-3): God declares that He is the one who seizes the appointed time and holds the earth’s pillars firm when everything else is not stable. This releases us from the exhausting weight of forcing personal or professional timelines. If a door is closed or a transition feels delayed, we can step back, knowing that His timing is both deliberate and just.
  • Surrender our Pride (vv. 4-7): Seeking validation or exalting ourselves through defiant striving is a primary source of spiritual fatigue. Because it is God alone who lowers one and lifts up another, we can drop our defensive postures. We don’t need to force our own recognition when we trust our position to the Father.
  • Accept God’s Timing and Judgement (vv. 8-10): The cup of foaming wine represents God’s absolute correction of injustice. Trusting that ultimate equity is safely held in His hands completely relieves us from playing the judge, jury, and executioner in our own daily narratives. We are freed to praise God while He handles the sorting.

Something to think about this week:

  1. In what area of your life are you currently lifting up your own “horn”, trying to force authority, control outcomes, or build security on your own terms rather than waiting on God’s timeline?
  2. Looking to the east, west, or desert represents seeking human solutions for structural anxieties. How can you practically pivot this week to trust the One who holds the pillars firm?

This week, find a way to quiet the internal noise that is grinding you down. Surrender the pressure to control the global narrative, step off the treadmill of anxious performance, and trust that the Creator of the universe is holding your foundations completely steady.

Have a great week!
Blessings,
